DAP Grant Recipients 2007

The Oneida Nation Arts Board awarded artists grants through the regranting program, the Dollars for Arts Program (DAP) for fiscal year 2008.

The grants are awarded for artistic endeavors and projects in both traditional and contemporary styles of dance, literature, music, theatre, and visual arts. The applicants are rated by a Peer Panel Review and funds are allocated by the Oneida Nation Arts Board based on the recommendations of the panel review. All activities must occur between October 1, 2007, and September 30, 2008.

The awards for fiscal 2008 were for excellence in art, artist development, and artistic projects that benefit the Oneida community. The following is the list of award winners, amount of grants and a brief description of grant activities:

 • Betty Willems - $500 Oneida Artist Fellowship for excellence in raised beading

 • Pat Benson - $885 Artist Development Award toward developing her expertise in creating porcelain dolls with Native American characteristics and clothing. 

•  Jennifer Stevens - $2,142 Artist Development Award toward intensive vocal training with opera singer-mezzo soprano, Barbara McAlister, culminating with a Native Classical Music Concert in Oneida featuring Barbara McAlister (Cherokee); her accompanist, Timothy Long (Choctaw/Cree) and Jennifer.

 • Northeast Wisconsin Dance Organization - $2,245 Community Award to underwrite participation fees for Oneida children to participate in the December 7 - 9 , 2007, professional production of the Nutcracker Ballet at the Meyer Theatre plus lecture and demo for Oneida students at the Meyer Theatre. 

• College of Menominee Nation, Green Bay Campus - $2,709 Community Award toward the spring production of Native American theatrical works that will generate an interest in Native American Theatre and provide Oneida students hands-on experience in creating theatre productions. 

• Oneida Community Library - $1,400 Community Award toward a sewing class for community members to teach them how to make traditional Oneida clothing and develop written instructions from the class to be available at the library for others to use. 

• Oneida Elderly Services - $544 Community Award for an intergenerational moccasin class with elders and children during the winter break. The project will benefit the Oneida community by offering a structured forum creating an environment of mutual respect through the interaction between the elders and children.  

• Fox Cities Performing Arts Center - $2,575 Community Award toward the outdoor presentation of Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest, on the Oneida pow-wow grounds and an outreach workshop for the Oneida High School students by the London based AandBC Theatre Company. In addition to the funding provided by the Oneida Nation Arts Program, the workshop and performance were supported by a partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Fond du Lac Arts Council, Lawrence University, American Players Theatre, Oshkosh’s Grand Opera House, and the Fox Valley Symphony.

The grants were awarded to organizations and Oneida artists with funds provided by the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Oneida tribe.
